City of Tomar at night in different places

Captured Moments

These two photos taken at the City of Tomar in Portugal, are captured moments in different days, thought they were both shot at night. When I was on holidays in my home town Tomar, my wife, my son and I used to go out every night to enjoy that wonderful portuguese coffee called “bica”. Well my son as a teenager doesn’t like coffee, so he usually had a cold drink or perhaps an ice cream. Anyway, back to the story, after our coffee we would usually walk around the city enjoying those summer balmy nights. As I always carried my camera with me, I took photos of anything that called my attention.

So these two photos below are the result of those walks. The first one is Mouchao Park at night. This park is a very popular spot for both tourists and locals. It is a small island surrounded by the waters of river Nabao and it’s a wonderful place to be. The second one is a show window of a shop located in one of Tomar old streets.

From Singapore Airport to Margareth River

Photo Challenges

Once again there isn’t much in common with these two places unless the photos below became part of the same event. That’s exactly what happened. When I came back from Potugal I waited for a flight to Perth at Singapore airport and a few weeks later I submitted one of the photos shot there to the Quick Shooters challenge at Photo Art Gallery. This photo ended up winning that week’s competition held on the 3rd of December 2010, under the topic Aviation.

In January 2011 I travelled to Margareth River, which is a fantastic place for a lot of activities, especially for those who love surfing. They even hold international surfing competitions over there. Of the many photos I shot there, there was the one below. Coincidentally on the 18th of February 2011, the Quick Shooter Challenge asked us to submit photos under the topic Photo Opportunity. Well, I uploaded this photo which shows a guy being tossed around by a big wave and once again I was lucky enough to win this competition.

Red Canoes at Lake Leschenaultia

Photo Series

Last year I spend an afternoon at Lake Leschenaultia with my wife, son and kids from Parkerville. I shot lots of photos with the kids swimming and fooling around but one of the highlights are those red canoes at the lake. People can hire one of the canoes for a few hours thorough a kiosk and cafe called Stokers and have a good time with their kids paddling around the lake. Only three people are allowed per canoe and of course kids must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.

Polaroids of Trigg Beach in Perth

Photo Effects

From time to time I like to experiment with graphic effects by using filters and programs that change a photo into something different. In this case, this is the reflection of the sun on the sand at Trigg Beach in Perth, Australia. What I did was using a graphic program that transformed the original photo into a collection of polaroids. Imagine shooting more than 80 polaroid photos of some spot in a beach to make a photo collage of the same place.

Chemtrails in the skies of Tomar

Photo Series

It was a beautiful October day (2010) in the City of Tomar in Portugal, when I saw chemtrails in the sky. Nobody knows exactly what they are for and who is behind them. Conspiracy theories abound but so far no clear explanations. Anyway good or bad in this case the chemtrails added a certain beauty to the landscape. In the second photo the chemtrails were already dispersing and in conjunction with the blue sky, the palm trees and the Nabao river, it looked like some place in the Caribbeans rather than an european town.

From Rottnest Island in Australia to Portugal

Photo Challenges

Rottnest Island in Perth, Australia and a road trip in Portugal, may have nothing to do with each other, except for the fact that these two photos below, were entries to my favorite photo challenge. I’m talking about the Quick Shooters Mini Competition that happens weekly at Photo Art Gallery. I have mentioned a few times in this photoblog that I visited Portugal in September 2010, and this is a road trip from the City of Tomar to a town called Proença-a-Nova. In fact this photo was shot at sundown when we were coming back to Tomar.

The second photo is from Rottnest Island in Perth, Australia and just like the other photo was submitted to the Quick Shooters Mini Competition but it was also an entry to the February 2011 Western Australia Challenge, under the title: “Sunset Over Water”. This shot was taken somewhere in the middle of Rottnest Island at the end of the day and it highlights those beautiful reflections on the water.

Burns Beach in the Northern Suburbs of Perth

Captured Moments

I have a house in Cragie, which isn’t too far away from Burns Beach. One day in 2010 my wife, my son and I decided to see a few houses on show in the area and after that we ended up visiting this beach which was named after a farmer who used to run sheep over there, when the beach was only accessible by track or boat. Anyway this is a photo of the rocky area of the beach where algae is growing. I found this spot quite original.

Weekend in Mandurah

Captured Moments

Mandurah is located about 70Km south of the City of Perth in Western Australia. I spent an entire weekend there with my family in the summer of 2010. This beautiful place along the shores of the Peel-Harvey Estuary, has grown from a small place for holidays to one of the biggest regional cities in the Perth region. I shot this photo when I saw how beautiful it was the clouds formation in the horizon.

Breakwater Tavern at Hillarys Harbour

Captured Moments

I have no commercial interest in talking about this place, but I have to say that the Breakwater Tavern at Hillarys Harbour in Perth, Australia is a great venue to visit with friends and family. They have a cocktail bar overlooking the harbour, a space for functions with great views, a lower deck space for lunch and breakfast with family and friends and a restaurant with stunning views across the harbour. Also and as you can see in this photo, those sunsets in summer days are just amazing!

Festival of Human Statues in Tomar, Portugal

Photo Series

Portugal is an old country, with a rich history and a lot of tradition. So when I visited Portugal in September 2010, I had the chance to shoot thousands of photos of a wide variety of topics. Among them was a Festival of Human Statues organized in the city of Tomar in Portugal. At the time I posted a more complete collection of this human statues festival at Photo Art Gallery. There you can find 16 photos related to this event.

In the meantime here are three of the photos I shot in that weekend. They are human statues representing the famous portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa in front of Cafe Paraiso, a knight of the Order of the Knights Templar who lived in the Castle of Tomar from the 12th to the 14th century, and another famous portuguese writer, Luiz de Camoes, who lived in the 16th Century. Camoes is especially known for writing in Homeric fashion the history of the Portuguese discoveries. His book is titled Lusiadas and it is Portugal’s national epic, just like Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey were for the Ancient Greeks.

Quick Shooters Mini Competition from Tomar in Portugal

Photo Challenges

In the middle of September 2010, I traveled to Portugal to see my family, old friends and reacquaint myself with the city and country I was born.  I spent one and a half months there and shot thousands of photos, mainly of the City of Tomar, an historical place with more than 800 years of history, which includes a castle and a convent, recognized by Unesco as part of the world heritage.

These two photos below shot in Tomar were submitted to the Quick Shooters Mini Competition at Photo Art Gallery, which runs every week. The first photo of an old street in Tomar, shot in a Friday night, was selected as the winner of the Quick Shooters Challenge that week. The second photo was taken at Santa Iria fair in Tomar, also submitted to the same competition a couple of weeks later but it didn’t win.

Hillarys Harbour at night

Captured Moments

I was leaving Hillarys Harbour, going back home when I saw the lights coming from the yachts parked at the marina and the reflection on the water. I didn’t have a tripod with me as I rarely use one. I prefer taking photos quickly and without much preparation, but in this case I wish I had one. However there was some kind of fence separating us from the water and that was my tripod of the moment. So I just rested my camera on that fence and shot this photo.

Ducks at Joondalup Lake

Photo Series

These series of photos were shot in Perth, Western Australia, near Neil Hawkins Park at Joondalup Lake, which was named after a chairman of the region planning authority. Joondalup Lake has a lot of wildlife, especially ducks, lots of ducks as you can see in these three photos below. I was there at the end of the day and took many photos of these aquatic birds.

Placid beach in Perth

Captured Moments

Australia is probably one of the few countries in the world where you can find a beach with few people or even with nobody around. Perth is no exception and here is an example. The photo below is a quiet spot I found at Mullaloo beach at sunset in one of the days of the summer 2009.

Photo and Painting of a Wooden Table in Parkerville

Photo Effects

I have a rustic wooden table in my backyard in Parkerville, Perth, Western Australia, and the seats around it, as you can in the photo below are made of tree trunks. This wasn’t built by me. It was already in the cottage when I arrived in 2007. The Parkerville kids love this table and sometimes we all have lunch there. It’s like a picnic area in a corner of the backyard. Anyway, since I sometimes use photos to experiment with special effects, I decided to make it a painting too, as you can see in the second image.
